First, I need to shout out the Junior League of Tallahassee for always staying ON POINT when it comes to being active in the community. If I wasn’t a member, I would not know all the amazing things going on in the community.
Second, I LIVE for mixers and I am SO HAPPY I had the opportunity to go to what I am about to write about…curious yet?
*Drum roll*…okay, okay…tonight I attended a board recruitment mixer! Insert shocked face….I know, I know, I was shocked too. I decided to attend because I am back to an old/ new city (meaning, old because I lived here before but new because so many things have changed) for the past five months, all I have been doing is working. I was looking for ways to give back, fulfill my passion, expand my reach in the community and gain more skills…AND get to know more people.
This event was sponsored by the Institute for Nonprofit Innovation and Excellence, the Big Bend Minority Chamber of Commerce, Club 25 and United Partners for Human Services. The event was held/ hosted by The LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts in Tallahassee, FL and I can tell you that this place was lovely and heavily (in a good way) decorated with art! A spectacular place! I even had the pleasure of chit chatting with the business manager. Check them out at http://www.lemoyne.org…they even have classes I want to check out.
Okay, so I walk up to the building and there was a little line and a guy standing out front. Interesting fellow who was giving me information about the Institute for Nonprofit Innovation and Excellence (INIE)…we will only use INIE because there full name is A LOT. There is a person that allowed us to write our name on a sticky name tag and on that tag, you can either get a red sticker if you were seeking to be on a board or a blue sticker if you were seeking individuals to be on a board.
SO i received my red sticker.
So, this event allowed you to work the room, get to know people who are on boards, search for board members or are current board members who was searching for new board members. I was totally in my element.
So let me explain a board for those who don’t know. According to the Foundation Group (www.501c3.org) “The board of directors is the governing body of a nonprofit. Individuals who sit on the board are responsible for overseeing the organization’s activities.”
More to come on the board I selected…write me if you are on a board and share your experience.
